Annapurna Expedition

Annapurna Expedition attempts the highest of the four main summits of the Annapurna range, Annapurna I (8167m). Annapurna l is tenth among Earth’s fourteen eight-thousands. It was first climbed in 1950, as the first 8000M plus summit conquered by the French team under Maurice Herzog. This expedition has stood as an irony in the mountaineering world. The 10th highest mountain in the world was the first of the 8000-meter mountains to ever be climbed but since then climbing Annapurna has been notorious for its incredibly high fatality rate and has seen the lowest number of ascents as compared to other 8000 meter mountains. Annapurna is rarely attempted and summits on the mountain are rare. A combination of the overly difficult and steep terrain, unpredictable weather and risk of avalanches makes the Annapurna Expedition one of the most challenging expeditions in the Himalayas and the world despite being only 8091 meters high. Climbing the Annapurna expedition is not for inexperienced mountaineers and requires logistics and preparation to the highest degree. The climb up Annapurna is usually done in 3 camps and the standard route is via the West Face and Northwest Ridge. Historically, the Annapurna peaks have been among the world’s most treacherous mountains to climb with the particular case of the extremely steep south face of Annapurna I Main – a wall of rock that rises 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) – making it one of the most difficult climbs in the world. The ascent via the south face is considered by some the most difficult of all climbs. The entire massif and surrounding area are protected within the 7629 km Annapurna Conservation Area, the first and largest conservation area in Nepal.
