If you are looking for green meadows filled with colorful wildflowers, pristine color changing water lakes, meandering streams and amazing Himalayan views from high passes, then the Kashmir Lakes Circuit trek is the most highly recommended trek.

Starting from the popular hill station Sonamarg, the trail follows ancient routes taken by the Gujjars, the nomadic shepherds of Kashmir. Every day on the trail, trekkers are treated to breathtaking views of rugged snow-capped mountains, colorful grasslands, and trout filled crystal clear lakes. There are also high passes to be crossed, the highest being at 4191 m and rocky terrains to be navigated frequently. It goes without saying that it is a physically and mentally challenging trek and would require the trekkers to be physically fit and to have a penchant for the Himalayan remoteness to enjoy this trek.

Day 2 - Sonamarg to Nichnai via Shekdur

Today is the actual start of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek just a few kilometers ahead of Sonamarg. Begin early morning and start ascending towards the Shokdhari campsite. The trekking tail starting point is marked by a nice roadside Dhabha where one can buy packed food items for the trek. The trekking trail follows the Sindh River through the forest full of Maple and Pine trees. Enjoy beautiful views of Sonamarg and the glaciers en route and from the campsite.  After trekking for few hours turn around to see the superb panorama of Sonamarg valley. Descend into the Nichnai grazing ground (Shepherd’s valley) through a Silver Birch forest. Overnight camp at Nichnai.

Day 3 - Nichnai to Vishansar lake via Nichnai Pass

Trek from Nichnai to Vishansar Lake is long but a scenic one. It passes through beautiful lush green meadows. Today’s trek will comprise of a steep ascent to cross the Nichnai pass standing tall at 4080m and a descent towards the Vishansar & Kishansar lakes and into the Vishansar campsite. The best part of Kashmir Great Lakes trek is the views it offers to trekkers. We cross Nichnai pass which is quite wide open and offer great views of white snow-clad peaks. Visit the Vishansar lake situated 1km from the campsite. The beauty of the alpine high-altitude lake is just mesmerizing and unmatched. Surrounded by mountains and being hard to access, the waters of the lake are crystal clear and change color as the day proceeds. You are guaranteed to start feeling rejuvenated just sitting by the lake and listening to the lapping sounds of the water and soaking in the scenic beauty. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 4 – Exploration and rest day.

The day is free to explore Vishansar Lake and its surroundings which is just a few minutes away from our campsite. Don’t miss out to capture the reflections of mountain peaks in the lake. Also, explore the nearby Kishansar Lake which is also big and deep blue in colour. Note – Rest and acclimatization day can be either in Vishansar camp or Gangabal camp depending on the weather and camping conditions.

Day 5 - Vishansar lake to Gadsar via Gadsar Pass

After breakfast, we will start our trek passing by Kishansar Lake towards Gadsar Pass which will take around 2 to 3 hours. Be ready to capture the brilliant views of  both the Vishansar Lake and Kishansar Lake in full view together.  Trek up 250m to the Kishansar lake which is about 1/2 km from the Vishansar lake. Despite being close in distance, the twin lakes can be seen together only from the top at Gadsar pass. Gadsar is one of the most beautiful and most pristine lake of the Kashmir great lakes trek. Getting to the Gadsar pass at 4191 m is no easy task and is going to take a toll on your legs and back. However, the scintillating views at the top of the pass more than compensate for it. On one side of the Gadsar lake lies the snow-clad cliffs and on the other side open lush green meadows. Overnight camp at Gadsar

Day 6 - Gadsar to Satsar

Trek ahead, crossing an army camp, to the Satsar lakes. The Satsar lakes are a collection of 7 lakes in a cascade formation. Fed by melting snow, a couple of these lakes dry up in summer and autumn. The best way to reach Satsar is after crossing the river and enjoys the dipping of your feet in ice cold water. At Satsar and you can actually find water in various lakes depending upon the season of your trek and all of them are interconnected. Camp at the beautiful campsite near the first lake. Overnight camp at Satsar

Day 7 - Satsar to Gangabal twin lakes via Zaj Pass

Today is a tough day and be prepared for a long arduous trek. It will be a challenging trek as you cross rocky and boulder ridden terrain, cross few ridges and climb mountains to arrive for a break on a ridge at 3570m. After a quick break, keep going up to reach the final ridge at 3000m. From here, you can view the twin lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol. What follows is a steep rocky descent, few ups and downs, and entry into green meadows which lead to the Nundkol lake and Gangabal lake. Overnight camp at Gangabal.

Day 8 - Gangabal to Naranag Drive to Srinagar
