Kashmir valleys are a very renowned trekking region in the world. Kashmir itself is a Heaven on Earth; making it all the more desirable sight and a yielding site to commence this exhilarating sport, Trekking. Tarsar Marsar Trek is one of the highly opted treks of the Kashmir Valley. It is a trek encompassing a journey to the two beautiful twin lakes, Tarsar and Marsar, surrounded by the peaks of Kolahi Mountain. The twin lakes are known from 16th Century during the period of the ruler of Kashmir, Yusuf Shah Chak. The lakes are notable for their almond shape separated by a mountain, identical in nature, and is situated in the Aru District of Jammu and Kashmir. Both the lakes flow into opposite directions, the former joining with the Lidder River of Lidderwat and the later to the other side of Aru. Apparently, the Dachigam National Park is in vicinage to the Marsar Lake.

What makes the Tarsar Marsar Lake trek so favorable is the serenity that presides over the environment. The beautiful Aru, a shade of the Kashmir valley makes the expedition a peaceful and nurturing journey; a journey, though might not be highly fanciful but definitely peace rendering.

Tarsar Marsar Itinerary

Day 1 - Drive from Srinagar to Aru base camp

Arrive early at the Srinagar. We drive 3 hours from Srinagar to Aru Valley. Aru Valley is the first camp in our trek. On reaching there, we will set camp for the night.

Day 2- Trek from Aru to Lidderwat

Today is a gentle, but long climb from Aru to Lidderwat. You will cover a distance of 10 km in about 6 hours. Look out for two clear streams and a wooden bridge half hour before Lidderwat. You will pass through Nandkei which is a cluster of Gujjar settlements across the Lidder river. Once you reach Lidderwat, you can explore the meadows and the clear streams that run through it. It is an absolutely delightful experience. Overnight camp at Lidderwat

Day 3 - Trek from Lidderwat to Shekwas

Today’s climb is a steep one involving a lot of ascending. We first head to Hamwais, where we will cross the river. While crossing, we will battle another steep ascent to reach Shekwas – a beautiful meadow base-camp. At Shekwas we have to cross the stream of water that flows from Tarsar lake itself. The trail has numerous clear streams providing drinking water. The Shekwas is one of the best campsites of the entire trek. Overnight in tents.

Day 4 - Trek from Shekwas to Tarsar and explore Tarsar

It is a gentle climb to Tarsar through tall grasses, a few ridges and finally to the shore of the lake. Tarsar is 5 km above Shekwas and takes 4 hours with an altitude gain of 518 metres. The turquoise blue water is surrounded by lush meadows and snow-capped peaks – this campsite is truly heaven on earth. Overnight camp in tents at Tarsar

Day 5 - Trek from Tarsar to Sundarsar

The trek to Sundarsar covers a distance of 5 km in 5 hours with a pass crossing. The trail is a steep ascent in the beginning, followed by a descent and then a final gentle ascent to Sundarsar. Sundarsar lake is not as large as Tarsar. Yet, the setting of the lake is just as beautiful. Around the lake are long grassy stretches with little sprouting flowers of yellow, blue and white. Sundarsar has big, flat stretches that is a perfect camping spot.

Day 6 - Visit Marsar and then to Sonamasti

The trail initially is a climb to Marsar, which is at an altitude of 13,170 feet. Explore the surrounding meadows, and finally descend to 11,000 feet. The trek covers a distance of approximately 8 km in 6 hours. The Sonamasti valley is a sharp drop of over 2,000 feet, over a series of grassy ledges. Each of these ledges has a little stream that runs down from snow melts and falls down to the ledge below forming
a clear pond, before sliding off the cliff as a waterfall. The Sonamasti valley floor, again, is a breath-taking piece of nature’s art with small streams, brooks and green pastures. Camp for the night at Sonamasti.

Day 7 - Trek from Sonamasti to Aru, Drive to Srinagar
